The Escape Room Phenomenon

Getting locked in a room with a group of people may not sound like your cup of tea, but for more and more people, it’s the definition of a good time. Part game, part team-building, “escape rooms” have been popping up across the country since 2012.

In the game, a group is voluntarily locked in a room and looks for clues and solves puzzles to find a way out. Some rooms simply rely on locks and puzzles, some are themed with detailed missions, while others feature secret passages, trap doors and even live actors who interact with teams. Some venues are just one room, and others have multiple rooms of varying degrees of difficulty.

The phenomenon of escape rooms first started in Japan in 2007. Today there are at least 2,800 rooms worldwide, with more than 300 in the U.S. Enthusiasts say it’s a great way for people to interact and work together. Many venues report that up to 50 percent of their business is corporate clients using the game as a team-building exercise.

There are also plans to use escape rooms as an educational tool. A room is being designed at Fort Stanwix National Monument, located in Rome, NY, to teach the history of the fort and how the army concealed messages during the American Revolution. So if you’re looking for a new thrill, give it a try!
